Peridot is the gem variety of the mineral olivine. Its chemical composition includes iron and magnesium, with iron being the cause of its attractive yellow-green colors. Peridot often occurs in volcanic rocks called basalts, which are rich in these two elements. It has also been discovered in extra-terrestrial sources, i.e. meteorites. It has a MOHS hardness of 6.5 and has an orthorhombic crystal structure.

Historically, Peridot was considered to be extremely energetically protective, and was used by many different cultures to ward off evil spirits, curses and negative energies. Romans used Peridot to shun fears or nightmares. It was believed that when worn on the right arm, Peridot is its strongest. In ancient periods, all sorts of vessels and jars used for healing were made using the gemstone as it seemed that medicinals worked better in conjunction with Peridot.

Ancient Egyptian jewellery also features peridot in abundance as it was linked to wisdom, gentleness and fairness in its wearer. They believed it was the “Gem of the Sun”. Peridot is also believed to aid friendship, create peace of mind. These peace-loving properties kept it in high demand over the centuries with Napoleon Bonaparte expressing his love and admiration to his wife by gifting her a peridot, while Catholic bishops have worn peridot as a symbol of morality, purity and protection for a very long time.

Peridot is considered a great stone for new beginnings and clearing old patterns of behaviour that do not serve you, helping you to release negative and harmful thoughts and behaviours.  It helps to clear the heart and your auric field of negativity - either from yourself or others, and insils feelings of confidence, patience, clarity and truth.
