Labradorite belongs to the Feldspar family of gems, which also includes Moonstone, Sunstone and Amazonite.
Labradorite is one of our favourite minerals! It's beautiful iridescent play of colours (called labradorescence) caused by internal fractures in the mineral that reflect light back and forth, disperse it into different colours. It takes quite a bit of skill and knowledge for lapidaries (gem cutters) to know how to bring out the best colours and flash of Labradorite as it can look dark on some angles, and then when the light hits the right angles, the flashes of colour can be quite dazzling!
The Inuits of Canada believed that the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) were trapped inside the labradorite, creating its beautiful labradorescence. This may be why it has been referred to as a "Stone of Magic"!
