Herbs, Resins & Ritual Incense

Herbs, Resins & Ritual Incense

Plants, woods and natural resins have been used in aromatic, ceremonial and spiritual practices across cultures for generations. Today, they can form part of a personal ritual practice, whether you are preparing a space, marking a moment of transition, meditating or simply enjoying the fragrance and atmosphere created by natural incense.

Different materials are burned in different ways, so choosing the right method and equipment is an important part of working with them.

Smudge Sticks & Smoke-Cleansing Herbs

Our botanical bundles include White Sage, Desert Sage, Juniper, Eucalyptus and other aromatic herbs traditionally associated with practices such as cleansing, purification, protection, grounding and renewal.

Each plant carries its own history, aroma and traditional associations. Rather than prescribing a particular meaning or outcome, we encourage you to learn about the botanicals you choose and incorporate them into your practice with intention and respect.

Smudge sticks and other directly burned botanicals can be held over a suitable smudge bowl, abalone shell or cauldron to catch falling ash and embers.

Natural Resins & Aromatic Woods

Natural resins and aromatic woods offer a different incense experience. Materials such as frankincense, myrrh, benzoin and other botanical resins release their fragrance when gently heated, traditionally over burning charcoal.

Because only a small amount of resin is needed at a time, this method allows you to explore different aromas and blends according to the atmosphere or ritual you wish to create.

New to resin incense? Our How to Burn Resin & Loose Incense on Charcoal guide takes you through the process step by step.

Ritual Incense & Herb Blends

Our loose ritual incense and Magickal Herb Blends combine herbs, resins, woods and other botanicals around particular themes and traditional metaphysical associations.

Depending on the individual blend, these may be used as aromatic ritual materials, burned as incense where directed, or incorporated into your own personal practice. Always follow the instructions on the individual product listing, as the appropriate method of use varies between blends.

Choosing the Right Ritual Tools

For natural resins and loose incense burned over charcoal, choose a charcoal burner or cast iron cauldron, together with quick-light charcoal and suitable charcoal tongs.

For smudge sticks, Palo Santo and directly burned botanicals, a smudge bowl, abalone shell or suitable cauldron can help catch falling ash and embers.

Using Herbs & Incense with Care

Always follow the instructions provided with the individual product and only burn materials where burning is an intended use.

Burn incense and herbs in a well-ventilated area with good airflow. Use an appropriate vessel on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from flammable materials, and use an insulating trivet or tile where significant heat is generated.

Never leave burning or smouldering materials unattended. Keep away from children and pets, and allow all materials, ash and equipment to cool completely before handling or disposal.

Unless explicitly stated otherwise on the individual listing, products in this collection are intended for ritual, aromatic or incense use only and are not intended for ingestion.
