About Blue Turtles Jewellery
Blue Turtles is a Melbourne-based, family-run jewellery business founded in 2000, specialising in handcrafted sterling silver jewellery featuring crystals and gemstones. At the heart of their work is a genuine appreciation for the stones themselves, with gemstones individually handpicked and considered for the jewellery design they will become.
Founder Doron’s relationship with gemstones began long before Blue Turtles was officially established. After leaving his accounting career to travel in 1991, an encounter with handmade agate rings on the Indonesian island of Flores reignited a childhood fascination with coloured stones. Over the following years he developed his experience in gemstone sourcing and jewellery manufacturing before Blue Turtles was formally established in Australia in 2000.
Handcrafted with the Human Touch
Rather than mass-producing their jewellery, Blue Turtles works slowly with a small team of skilled artisans in Bali and Java. Stones are individually selected, designs are drawn by hand, and the jewellery is created using traditional silversmithing techniques alongside contemporary design.
Their artisans work within a cottage-industry model rather than a factory environment. Blue Turtles supports its silversmiths to operate their own small production spaces, working from their homes with their own equipment and at their own pace. It is an approach that values both the craft and the people behind each finished piece.
The result is sterling silver jewellery where the natural character of the gemstone remains central to the design, from unusual collector stones and richly patterned cabochons to more familiar crystals chosen for exceptional colour and character.
Conscious Jewellery
Blue Turtles describes itself as a socially conscious business, with commitments to respectful relationships with its artisans, employees and customers. The business contributes at least 10% of its income to charities and people in need in both Australia and Indonesia, while supporting its Indonesian artisans to work as independent small-business owners.
There is another part of their philosophy that feels particularly aligned with Nature’s Magick: they explicitly reject hard-sell and manipulative sales practices. Their approach is simply to create beautiful jewellery and allow the person it resonates with to choose it.
